In the silk-road town of Sheki, the summer palace of the Sheki Khans stands behind plane trees older than the building — two storeys of shebeke stained glass and hand-painted fresco, assembled without a single nail. Pre-wedding events here feel like stepping into a miniature painting: mehendi in the gardens, an evening of mugham and qawwali under the arcades.
